LARGEST BAND OF SMUGGLERS ON DYMCHURCH BEACH IN OVER 200 YEARS

The authorities and customs officers were unable to stop 255 members of the Scarecrow’s gang gathering together on mass during the 50th Anniversary of The Day of Syn.

Men, women and children all dressed in their smuggling attire joined the infamous Scarecrow and his accomplices to set a record on Sunday 24th August 2014 for the most smugglers all together in one place at one time!

Although heavy rain on Bank Holiday Monday meant all planned events had to be cancelled, both Saturday 23 August and Sunday 24 August were very successful and enjoyed by many spectators.

This being our 50th anniversary it was to be our biggest fete and largest parade. We had beauty queens from Dover, Deal and Dymchurch, reenactment groups, stilt walkers, dancers and characters from the Day of Syn all at the ready. We were very disheartened but this can not distract from the excellent day that we had on Saturday and Sunday.

There were many visitors to the Martello Tower and a large attendance of spectators to the church parade, which packed out the church for our Evensong service.

It’s Official, we made a new World Record

It was great to see hundreds of children who dressed up for the fancy dress competition and took part in the Treasure Hunt over the weekend.

The Committee would like to thank everyone that sold programmes, dressed the part and helped organise the weekend.

We appreciate all the hard work and preparations made by the performers, sponsors and Dymchurch Art Club that took part and those who planned to take part on Bank Holiday Monday. We hope we will be able to raise enough funds for everyone to return in 2016.
